When encountering very rough or rugged terrains, such as large rocks or steep inclines, the Q5’s ground clearance may not be enough, and getting stuck or damaging the undercarriage becomes likely. Undercarriage damage can have serious implications for the braking system, posing potential risks and compromising its functionality.
While the Quattro system provides impressive traction and stability, it’s important to consider the Q5’s ground clearance when venturing into demanding off-road areas.

The Q5’s suspension is designed to provide a smooth and comfortable ride, prioritising comfort for everyday driving on regular roads. When I got my Audi, I was shocked at how cushioned the suspension was – in the Comfort select mode it felt like I was on a cloud! It effectively absorbs vibrations and impacts, offering a pleasant driving experience for both the driver and passengers. This is especially beneficial when navigating city streets or bumpy roads.
When it comes to off-roading, the Q5’s suspension performs well within its intended range. It can handle mild off-road trails and surfaces, such as gravel or dirt roads, with relative ease while keeping the passengers comfortable. However, the Q5’s suspension is not specifically tuned or optimised for extreme off-road challenges. It may face limitations when encountering more demanding obstacles, such as large rocks, deep ruts, or extremely uneven terrains.
Select Modes and Transmission in the Audi Q5
To enhance off-road performance, the Audi Q5 offers drive select modes, allowing drivers to adjust the vehicle’s settings for different driving conditions. While these modes provide some level of customisation, it doesn’t offer an off-road select mode or a mode that could act as an off-road setting.
In addition to drive select, most newer Audi Q5s have an automatic transmission, which often serves as a disadvantage. Manual transmissions provide greater control and precision, allowing drivers to carefully manage throttle and gear selection. They offer more torque and power at lower speeds, which is beneficial for tackling steep inclines and challenging terrains. Manual transmissions are also known for their durability and reliability in extreme conditions. An automatic vehicle for off-roading is not a popular choice.
Audi Q5 Safety Features for Off-Roading
The Audi Q5 is equipped with a range of advanced safety features which contribute to a sense of security and safety while driving both on and off the road.

This system uses sensors to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead by automatically adjusting the speed, ensuring a smoother and more controlled driving experience. But when would you use these features during off-roading? Likely never. While these safety features in the Audi Q5 offer valuable benefits, they’re not designed for off-road performance.
In addition to the safety features just not being adequate enough for off-roading, I always found the technology a bit irritating when I was trying to push limits, like going around corners quickly or stopping a bit close behind someone at the traffic lights. The Audi sensing features would brake to avoid me getting into a crash. Now, I don’t mean the Audi technology is bad – in fact I think it’s incredible most of the time. But, for obvious reasons, I personally would not take an Audi Q5 off-roading, where you’re constantly accelerating, decelerating and swerving. There’d be a lot of unwanted interference!

Although having comfortable seats is great, safety and handling are generally the most important for an off-road car.
Can I go Off-Roading in My Audi Q5?
So, is the Audi Q5 capable of off-road? Ultimately, going off-roading in the Audi Q5 isn’t the wisest choice. The Q5 is a luxury car that is relatively cheap to maintain but is more in the luxury family cars category. If you prioritise dedicated off-road performance, there are other cars available on the market that are better suited to meet your specific needs, such as the Toyota Landcruiser and Ford Ranger. But why buy a luxury car? If your primary need is a luxurious and versatile vehicle that can handle occasional off-road endeavours, the Q5 is an excellent choice that will be worth the investment.
